This is particularly true for renewal and cabin crew medicals which we can put up at relatively short-notice.

INITIAL CLASS 1 & 3 FAQs

  • You can book an initial class 1 medical by clicking on this LINK.

  • Yes. You can have both medicals done with us, and at the same time. You can book both medicals on our website or you can request that we add the second medical on the day of the medical assessment itself.

  • Pilots wishing to fly commercially (aeroplane or helicopter) must have a class 1 medical. The very first one known as the Initial Class 1, can only be done at an Aeromedical Centre such as ours at Birmingham Aeromedical Centre, located at Birmingham Airport.

If the pilot previously held a class 1 medical that has expired for 5 years or more, the pilot will need to book an initial class 1 medical appointment at our Aeromedical Centre at Birmingham Airport.

Due to Brexit and since 1 Jan 2021 the UK is no longer a member of the European aviation regulator (EASA). This means the pilot needs to choose whether they are applying for UK Initial Class 1 or a European (EASA) Initial Class 1, or indeed both. It all depends on the pilot’s personal circumstances and the pilot should discuss their requirements with their flying school or operator.

  • Before the medical, do the following:

You do not need to fast before the medical.

  • You have to bring the following to your initial class 1 medical:

  • There is no problem and you do NOT need to take any further action.

When you apply for a UK CAA medical certificate on Cellma and pay their fee, you will get a message saying the application needs to be approved. This simply means the AME needs to approve or validate the application form. We will do that for you on the day of the medical.

  • This is not problem. We can make the necessary changes for you.

When you attend for your medical, let us know what changes you would like on your medical application form and we should be able to change it for you.

We cannot change it before you attend the medical.

  • Yes, that is fine. You will need to be able to login on the day of the medical for the doctor to have a look at it.

  • Leave the space on the application form for EASA reference number blank, unless you have one or know it. We will sort it on the day of your initial EASA class 1 medical.

  • We do initial EASA initial class 1 medicals for any EASA member state e.g. Ireland, Austria, Denmark, Spain etc etc. The State (country) you choose is, generally speaking, the country you are seeking to apply for a license from.

After we issue your medical certificate, we will send your complete medical file to that country so that if and when you apply for a license from them, they will be able to see that you have a medical.

If you are not sure about which country (EASA member state) to apply to, you should seek advice from your flying school or employer, as applicable.

  • Yes you can. After completing the medical and receiving your medical certificate, you can transfer your medical from one EASA Authority to another (e.g. from Spain to Ireland) by completing a SOLI (State of License Issue) transfer.

You will need to contact both Authorities and inform them of your intention and they will advise you what to do. This is not something we get involved with.

If your medical certificate was not issued, meaning your file had not yet been sent to the Authority, we may be able to change the Authority for you. This will incur an administrative charge in accordance with our fees schedule.

  • Yes, we have free parking at our Birmingham Aeromedical Centre site.

  • If you had never had a UK class 1 medical certificate before, then you need an INITIAL UK class 1 medical. You can BOOK ONLINE with us at Birmingham Aeromedical Centre.

If you previously had a UK class 1 medical certificate and had transferred your medical to an EASA member state before Brexit, and you didn’t regain your CAA medical using their ‘re-entry’ process i.e. regaining your UK medical on the back of your EASA medical, you will need to do an INITIAL UK class 1.

  • Yes, medical certificates for all classes of medicals are generally issued on the same if the medical is passed.

  • Yes. Since 1 January 2021 (end of the Brexit transition period), we have been able to perform both a UK and an EASA medical at the same time. You will be required to complete 2 separate application forms. You can book a combined medical directly on the website or you can add a second medical on the day of your medical. • If your class 1 medical has expired for 5 years or more, then you require an initial medical. Otherwise, you only require a renewal.

Check the expiry date on the medical certificate that says: “Class 1 other commercial operations.” If that date is 5 years or more old, then you require an initial class 1 medical, otherwise you require a renewal medical.

These assessments and reports are to be performed by a specialist and not the GP. The GP is unlikely to refer you to have these assessments done under the NHS because the assessments are required for compliance purposes and not on clinical grounds (i.e. they are not required because you are thought to be unwell).

After the medical, we will write a referral letter for you to take to your specialist. If you do not have one, we will also provide a list of specialists we have used in the past.

Specialists are independent medical practitioners who manage their availability and fees independent of us.

For initial class 3 applicants, a CAD is performed routinely as part of the examination as it is a requirement for the ATCO medical. The cost is included in the price of the initial class 3 medical.

The reason pilot applicants pay extra for this and ATCO (class 3 applicants) do not is because there are some tests that pilots do and ATCOs do not.

This is particularly true for renewal and cabin crew medicals which we can put up at relatively short-notice.
